This report draws attention to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on African CSOs while highlighting the essential work they continue to perform. It calls on governments, funders and other stakeholders to recognize, partner with and support African CSOs, whose actions, along with public and private sector solutions, are critical to driving a comprehensive response to COVID-19 and to ensuring a post-pandemic future with a resilient and sustainable civil society sector.
About the Report
EPIC-Africa and @AfricanNGOs conducted their second report on the impact of COVID-19 on African Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). The survey aimed to assess the ongoing effects of the pandemic, capture how CSOs were responding, and compare findings with the previous report. It gathered data from 1,039 CSOs in 46 African countries, highlighting the challenges and resilience of the sector. The report also included cross-country and cross-sectoral comparisons, as well as insights from funders of African CSOs, providing a comprehensive analysis of the situation. Survey fatigue may have contributed to a lower-than-expected response rate.
EPIC-Africa and @AfricanNGOs collaborated with the Centre for African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) at Wits Business School for in-depth analysis. They used SurveyMonkey as an efficient tool to collect quantitative and qualitative data. The survey findings, supplemented by descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation, offer valuable insights to inform discussions on building resilience in the African CSO sector amidst the prolonged disruption and uncertainty caused by the pandemic.
